The film follows Teresa (Barbara Colen), who comes to her home in Bacurau, a village in the semi-arid part of Brazil, to attend her grandmother’s funeral. Upon arrival, Teresa immediately sees signs that Bacurau is in serious trouble. Basic services are scarce, cell phone coverage is fading, drinking water supply is clogged, and a truck taking drinking water is full of bullet holes. It soon becomes clear that the corrupt government has completely abandoned the village – not only has Bacurau been literally wiped off the map, but its citizens have also been attacked. As those responsible approach, villagers must establish organized resistance to prevent further damage.
